A bulkamid injection is used as a treatment for stress urinary incontinence. This is a common condition among women of a variety of ages and is typically more frequent as you get older. It can be triggered by childbirth, ageing or pelvic issues. These issues can cause your pelvic floor to weaken, preventing your urethra from closing properly when pressure is put on the bladder. Urine then tends to leak out, particularly when you sneeze, laugh, run or walk.
Bulkamid can be injected into several locations in the urethral wall, in order to help the urethra close as it is meant to.
If you are suffering from incontinence and it is impacting your daily life, you may be a good candidate for Bulkamid injections. It can be uncomfortable to have to wear incontinence pads, and can limit your ability to participate in regular activities such as exercise. You may even find that a cough or a sneeze can lead to an embarrassing moment.
If you find that you’re experiencing this issue consistently, or if you feel it is getting worse, this treatment could be a good option. The problem is unlikely to go away on its own, so an injectable is an ideal, practically pain-free solution. If you have a busy lifestyle and can’t afford to take too much time off to recover, this treatment option is particularly suitable.
The treatment works by injecting a pea-sized lump of bulkamid into three to four areas in the urethral wall. This is a short procedure known as bulking, and takes only five to ten minutes. You will likely be given only a local anaesthetic for the procedure, which is typically carried out in a day surgery ward of a hospital.
Once the bulkamid has been inserted into the wall, it works to restore the regular closing pressure of the entrance to the urethra, preventing leakages. The procedure is done via a series of very small injections. There are no incisions, and you should only feel a very mild sting of discomfort.
In the majority of cases, patients require very little recovery time. Most people can resume their usual activities within a day. However, you should take it easy for a few hours after the procedure, and make sure you stay hydrated. Keep an eye on your health in the days and weeks that follow treatment, and see your doctor again should symptoms not improve. However, the treatment is found to be effective in three out of four women.
